This poem was included in the original 1915 edition.

MAURICE, weep not, I am not here under this pine tree.
The balmy air of spring whispers through the sweet grass,
The stars sparkle, the whippoorwill calls,
But thou grievest, while my soul lies rapturous
In the blest Nirvana of eternal light!
Go to the good heart that is my husband
Who broods upon what he calls our guilty love:--
Tell him that my love for you, no less than my love for him
Wrought out my destiny-- that through the flesh
I won spirit, and through spirit, peace.
There is no marriage in heaven
But there is love.

"There is no marriage in heaven
But there is love."

This must have been so offensive to many of Masters's readers.

yes, this must have been extremely offensive to inhabitants of Masters' home places in 1915 when published. I think he was brave indeed to write this poem & end it in this way. actually, I would contend that if heaven exists, Masters is quite correct about how it would be. what need, in heaven, for such a gimcrack jerryrigged darnednearimpossible institution as marriage?

Sarah Brown's statement that there is no marriage in heaven is a Biblical allusion. Jesus says in Luke 20:34, "The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God's children, since they are children of the resurrection."
